Usage is growing, but the value path is incomplete

The immediate bottleneck is not necessarily throughput. Transaction counts are rising, new applications continue to launch, and total value locked is described as steady, while institutions are still building on Ethereum scaling infrastructure. Yet the market has not treated that activity as sufficient evidence for stronger L2 token economics.

Let us examine the architecture behind the disconnect. Many L2 tokens currently provide governance rights or rewards for participation, but generally do not receive a direct share of protocol revenue. Consequently, more transactions can produce more fees for the network without establishing a clear mechanism through which those fees accrue to token holders.

This distinction is essential. Network adoption measures usage; token economics determine who captures the resulting value. If the token is primarily a governance instrument, rising throughput may improve the protocol while leaving the asset’s economic claim unchanged. The result is a widening gap between operational growth and market valuation.

For analysts, the relevant question is therefore not simply whether an L2 is processing more activity. It is whether the protocol’s emission structure, fee flows, governance rights, and security commitments connect that activity to the token. The available reporting suggests that investors are becoming more cautious precisely because this connection remains weak across much of the sector.

Ethereum’s progress raises the standard for L2s

The second pressure point is strategic. Coin Edition reported that Vitalik Buterin questioned whether Ethereum’s original L2 roadmap still fits current conditions. The earlier concept of L2s operating as “branded shards” was described as less relevant as Layer 1 fees declined and gas limits increased in 2026.

Buterin’s proposed direction was not an abandonment of scaling, but a demand for clearer specialization. L2s could differentiate through specialized virtual machines for privacy, extreme speed, non-financial applications, or very low latency. At the same time, networks handling ETH or Ethereum assets would be expected to commit to at least stage 1 security.

That shift changes the investment framework. If generic scaling becomes less distinctive, an L2 must demonstrate why its architecture deserves a separate economic layer. A specialized execution environment, stronger security model, or meaningful interoperability role may provide a clearer basis for long-term utility than transaction growth alone.

The comments did not trigger a sudden crash according to the report, but they added to existing caution around L2 valuations. Essentially, the market is being asked to distinguish between infrastructure that expands and tokens that capture value from that expansion.

What could repair the tokenomics?

Several proposed upgrades could strengthen the relationship between network activity and token economics, although their eventual market impact remains uncertain. Shared sequencing could allow multiple L2s to use a common ordering system, improving coordination and potentially opening new revenue channels. Based rollups would move sequencing closer to Ethereum itself, potentially increasing the importance of ETH while also changing how L2 economics are structured.

Interoperability initiatives such as AggLayer and Superchain aim to make separate L2s operate more like a unified system. If those designs reduce fragmentation, they could improve market depth and make activity across networks more economically legible. Future security upgrades may also connect L2s more closely to Ethereum and introduce additional staking or economic mechanisms.

For now, the practical takeaway is narrow but important: L2 growth should be evaluated on two separate tracks. First, measure whether the network is gaining users, applications, transactions, and TVL. Then examine whether its token has a defined claim on revenue, security, coordination, or another scarce function within the architecture.

Until that second layer becomes clearer, Ethereum scaling can continue to succeed operationally while L2 tokens struggle to justify a corresponding economic premium. The long-term sustainability question is not whether more blockspace is being used, but whether the protocol has designed a durable value-accrual mechanism around that use.
