Ether.fi Expands Beyond Crypto with Tokenized Stocks and Aave-Powered Lending
Ether.fi shipped its summer app update on Thursday, adding tokenized stocks, metals, and Aave-backed loans to its self-custody neobank.

Per WalletInvestor's coverage, ETHFI spiked 13.85% on the day to roughly $0.44 — a move layered on top of a one-year chart still down 66.06%.
New Mechanics: Loans, Tokenized Assets, Multi-Currency Payments
The borrowing rail runs on Aave's Optimism deployment, not an in-house lending book. Portfolio-backed loans clear at rates close to 4%, with liquidation logic and rate dynamics inherited directly from the underlying market. That dependency cuts both ways: a competitive headline rate paired with full exposure to Aave utilization swings and the protocol's own liquidation parameters.
The wallet now holds tokenized equities, commodities, and securities alongside digital assets, with a payments layer settling in more than 30 currencies. Ether.fi framed the release as "less crypto-forward" — positioning aimed at users who never opened a DEX. The mechanics are live. Whether non-crypto retail migrates to a self-custody app for tokenized equities is the open variable.
Tokenomics: Programmatic Buybacks on a Brutal Chart
Every revenue stream — trading fees, loan spreads, payment revenue — feeds a scheduled ETHFI buyback rather than discretionary treasury moves. The release lands roughly a week after Ether.fi stripped restaking out of weETH, per The Defiant. The sequencing tightens the value-capture thesis: revenue in, buybacks out, a simpler claim on protocol cash flow.
The 13.85% daily spike sits over a destructive multi-horizon path:
- 7 days: roughly -1.8%
- 14 days: -3.5%
- 3 months: -20.2%
- 6 months: -35.5%
- 1 year: -56.9%
WalletInvestor's model rates ETHFI B+ but projects a deeply negative five-year trajectory. The model and the chart are not telling the same story.
Risk-Reward Assessment
- Aave utilization: any rate spike on the underlying market resets loan economics; the 4% headline is a snapshot, not a floor
- Liquidation parameters: portfolio-backed loans carry the same collateral risk mechanics as any Aave position
- Tokenized equity liquidity: bid-ask spreads on tokenized stocks will determine whether the feature is functional or cosmetic
- Buyback volume vs. float: scheduled purchases lose to unlocks if supply expansion outpaces demand
- weETH simplification: stripping restaking narrows the core asset — cleaner tokenomics, but a smaller product surface
Net read: the product expansion is real and the rails are battle-tested. The market has not yet priced the pivot — the 30-day return of 11.65% and 90-day return of 8.42% read as a relief bounce inside a 66% annual drawdown, not a trend reversal. Watch Aave utilization, bid-ask spreads on the tokenized book, and buyback execution volume against unlock schedules before sizing any position.
